Where do you start on something like this? It started in Fairbanks, Alaska when a professor brought in his mandolin and played for us. It was entrancing, and then he said, "A stringed instrument is the best thing you will ever do for your life." It was almost viral in essence, and hung in my heart and soul until I moved down to Bellingham, Washington.
There, I met Dave McGraw, who is now quite a folk singer. Worth a Google, if you ask me. He wasn't using his guitar (being a drummer in a band), and we traded good ol' Jim Beam for guitar time. I don't know who got the better end of the deal at the time, but it seems we have both won.
So that is how it started. Then I basically holed up for many years and taught myself to play by writing overly simplistic songs...which is not much less than I currently do.

As for purpose, I guess I need to say that writing music is basically my release. Like some people like to disappear in a book or story, I find that zone when writing.
I used to get asked who I write for, and the reality is that I am pretty much a failed poet who writes to tell other people's stories or to expose some insight in the system we live in. Who knows really. Song to song, I guess.
That said, I record on various systems...
But it works.
So people know, most releases are one-time sessions that have different feelings based on the mood I am in. I record almost exclusively this way:
Lay down a guitar track. Keep one take.
Lay down a vocal track. Keep one take (I lose the "feel" if I break it into pieces).
Add harmonies. If I have time or energy.
That is it.
For now, I keep it raw, and plan on stepping up to collaborating more and spending more time piecing together recordings.
